 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question:   What is "triple-scented?"
Answer:   Sonlight Candles triple scents every candle. That’s why our candle smells so good for so long. The industry standard recommends ½ oz of fragrance for every 16 oz of wax. Triple scented means that we have used 1½ oz per every 16 oz of wax.
Question:   How does a candle work?
Answer:   There are two parts that work together in a candle: · The fuel, made of some sort of wax · The wick, made of some sort of absorbent twine The wick needs to be naturally absorbent, or it needs to have a strong capillary action (as in glass fiber wicks used in oil lamps). Paraffin wax is a heavy hydrocarbon originated from crude oil. When you light a candle, the wax melts in and near the wick. The wick absorbs the liquid wax and pulls it upward. The heat of the flame vaporizes the wax, and it is the wax vapor that burns.
Question:   What kind of wax do you use?
Answer:   When making our container candles, we use our own special Paraffin blend of wax. It is consistent with the industry standard which allows us to give you a much better scent throw, and last longer. We want to triple scent our candles, so the wax must be able to hold that amount.
Question:   Why does my candle jar "soot up" so bad?
Answer:   Too large a flame will produce carbon. The key for that perfect burning candle is wick maintenance. The wick must be trimmed to no more than 1/4" throughout the candle life. The candle can be burned for several hours without trimming. Note: Burning a candle for longer periods of time than recommended can cause a wick to "mushroom" or produce a large black clump on the wick. Always keep your wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch and burn for only the recommended amount of time to prevent this effect.
Question:   How is the best way to
Answer:   Using a pair of tweezers or a specially made candle rod, bend the lit wick into the melted wax. This will extinguish your flame with little to no smoking.
Question:   I burned my candle for a couple of hours, and it seems to have lost it's fragrance. Why?
Answer:   Probably because only the top surface of the candle was scented! Sonlight Candles blends the entire wax batch with some of the best fragrance oil made. Our fragrance should last for the life of the candle.
Question:   What are good candle burning rules?
Answer:   Never allow any candle to burn longer then 3-4 hours without extiquising it, allowing it to cool completely, trimming the wicks, removing any wick debris, before re-lighting it. Candle care and candle burning is a responsibility, please burn wisely!

1. Always use extreme care when burning candles!
2. To avoid smoking when extinguishing your candle, bend the lit wick into the already melted wax.
3. Our candles are HIGHLY scented. Please always keep your wicks trimmed to 1/4 inch and remove all wick debris before lighting each time.
4. Always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before each lighting!
5. Keep you’re wicked centered at all times.
6. Handle with care and place all burning candles on a heat resistant surface.
7. Keep all candles out of the reach of children and pets!
8. Never burn candles near anything that can catch fire.
9. Always leave 1/4 inch of unburned candle at the bottom of each container to keep from cracking containers and debris from igniting.
10. NEVER leave a candle burning unattended!!
11. Try to keep your burning candle out of vents, drafts and other strong air currents.

Approximate Candle Burn Times... 8 oz. Containers -- 60-80 hrs. 16 oz. Containers -- 140-160 hrs. 20 oz. Containers -- 180-200 hrs.
Question:   I've heard that candles have memories. What does that mean?
Answer:   When you first light your candle, let it burn for one hour for each inch in diameter. (ex – if your diameter of your jar is 3 inches, allow the candle to burn for 3 hours.) This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside and will prevent your candle from forming a "canyon" in the center. Burning a candle like this will set its memory. Each time you burn the candle it will "remember" to burn to it's edge.
Question:   What is your disclaimer?
Answer:   Candle care and candle burning is your responsibility. We are NOT responsible for damage or injury due to lack of care and attention when burning our candles.
Sonlight Candles & Gifts shall not be responsible for any injuries, damages or losses of any kind due to your misuse of any candles bought from us.
Question:   What are your shipping policies?
Answer:   We will ship your order the most economical way possible. We use either U.S. Priority Mail, or U.P.S. If the shipping calculator on the shopping cart is as much as 10% too low, we will contact you for instructions before your credit card is charged. Otherwise, a slight adjustment will be made to cover the cost of shipping. Also, we never ship candles during the hot weather times, until Monday or Tuesday of the week. We don't want our temperature sensitive candle products sitting in a hot van at a dock over the weekend.
