Remember high SPF alone is not enough to protect your skin from UV induced damage which can come from both UVB and UVA rays. Both UVA and UVB rays are now believed to contribute to skin cancer as well as premature aging of the skin.
The myth about SPF 15 continues…SPF ratings only measure the amount of time it takes to redden the skin following UVB exposure (not UVA) when using a sunscreen compared to without. SPF 15 screens out 93% of the sun’s UVB rays, SPF 30 97% and SPF 50 98%! But this protection can be up to 50% less if small amounts of sunscreen are applied, sunscreen is not re-applied after sweating, rubbing, swimming or sunscreen ingredients are not photostable.
Dr. Roberts recommends SPF 30 or higher daily for limited casual exposure and SPF 60 or greater to all her patients for outdoor activities or if driving in your car for more than 1 hour.
To protect against the damaging effects of year round UVA exposure, look for ”broad spectrum” sunscreens which protect against UVA & UVB rays with ingredients like Mexoryl or Avobenzone(Parsol 1789) photo stabilized with Octocrylene.
Remember to seek the shade during peak hours when possible, sun protective clothing, hats, sun glasses and tinting car windows (to block UVA) will go a long way to keeping you sun safe throughout the year.
