As soon as in the 19th century, more precisely on March 6, 1844, began the history of the route Hamburg-Berlin (route lngth: 286 km). Two years later, on October 1846, the first leg of the route from BErlin over Wittenberge to Boitzenburg had been inaugurated. On December 15, 1846, drove all the way from Berlin to Hamburg for the first time - an important rairoad history. With the "Fliegender Hamburger" the new era of fast-track traffic began.
The front-headline of the newspaper "Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger" on Monday, December 18, 1932, was "Berlin - Hamburg in 144 minutes. Fast railcar is running the predicted 122 km/h."
But the "Fliegende Hamburger" could noch reach the stunning maximum speed of 231 km/h of the "Schienenzeppelin" on June 21, 1931 from Bergedorf, close to Hamburg, to Berlin-Spandau. Lateron, due to the separation of Germany, the driving time was extended to four hours. Only on may 29, 1997, could the driving time from the twenties of 2 hours and 15 minutes be realized again, after the ICE-route "Fliegender Hamburger" had been electrically modernized.
