The depiction shows the inside of a Apache wickiup. A metate or grinding stone is being used to grind blue corn into meal. Although the stone is passed down through generations and prized today among Apache women, the technique of using the stone for grinding purposes is a tradition that has disappeared. The stone was also used to grind dried venison as ingredients in traditional tamales, dumplings and stews. Also, typical store bought flour is used today to make traditional breads.
